How do you think The Perks of Being a Wallflower is different from other high school movies?
I feel like it’s not a storybook stereotypical kind of high school story or experience. It feels real. It’s about the odd balls, not about the cool kids, know what I mean? High school is a roller coaster ride. There’s good times and bad times and your friends are what get you through. That’s why I feel like it felt like a real, true version of high school.
The movie touches on some dark topics — drugs, sex, abuse. Do you think it’s important to open a discussion about the real issues that teens are facing?
Yes, I definitely think it’s very important. The way you find out that you’re not the only one going through something is by talking about it and being open about it. In my [character's] case, it’s the abuse that happens too often.
The season premiere of The Vampire Diaries is Oct. 11. Can you give us any clues about what’s coming?
All I can really say is that [my character] might surprise everyone. It starts off conflicted and all over the place because that’s her state of mind at the beginning, but then she’ll grow into eventually a more confident and surprising vampire.
Your boyfriend Ian Somerhalder plays bad-boy vampire Damon. Are you Team Damon or Team Stefan?
It’s hard for me — I can’t really be on one team or another. I just have to do what’s written on the page!

So, how does it feel to be a vampire?
Nina Dobrev: I’ve already been a vampire, technically. I was Katherine, so I’m actually kind of sad! I liked being both! I walked around set bragging about how I got to be both characters, like I get to be human and a vampire. I had the best of both worlds, but now I have no bragging rights. No street cred on set!
How do you think Katherine will react to Elena being a vampire now?
Nina Dobrev: She’s gonna be pissed. She’s not going to be happy. She was hoping that the Salvatore brothers would, you know, they’d experience their, um, that they’d get over the fad of Elena for one lifetime, and she’d be back on track with the boys. But now she’s screwed.
Was it always the plan for Elena to become a vampire?
Nina Dobrev: It was definitely a plan, it was just a matter of when. I mean, it happened in the books, so it was definitely gonna happen in the show. And I think at one point, there was talk of it happening in season two, and I’m glad that they waited until season three.
How do you think it’s going to change her relationships with her friends? I mean, obviously, the relationship with Damon and Stefan is bound to change. I mean, Caroline’s a vampire, so–
Nina Dobrev: I mean, yeah. Caroline kind of was accepted by the group as a vampire. I think everyone’s just going to be sad. They’ve just spent three years, or three seasons– I don’t know how long that is in the show– but they’ve just spent all this time doing everything in their power to protect her. And now she’s a vampire. So, I guess now she can protect herself.
Intervju Nina gjorde med EW i början av veckan
After hearing that 16-year-old U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas is a huge fan of their show, the cast of The Vampire Diaries made her a video congratulating her on her team and individual all-around golds and wishing her and her teammate, Aly Raisman, good luck in today’s event finals. Watch it below.
Nina Dobrev, a former artistic and rhythmic gymnast, was behind the group effort. “Forget sleep. It’s all about the Olympics right now. I’m obsessed. Like, it’s actually a problem. They’re starting to tell me I’m looking tired on set, and it’s because I’m up until, like, two in the morning watching the Olympics and going to work at 5 a.m.,” Dobrev told EW earlier today. “I used to be a gymnast, and I competed internationally, so it’s my favorite time. I even bought a 3D TV so that I could watch them in 3D. When I found out that Gabby liked the show, I was incredibly excited and really happy to make the video. And now we follow each other on Twitter, so we’ve been direct messaging. The 16-year-old in me wishes that I was up there with them. So I’m just so happy for her success. And she’s so cute. She has the most amazing smile.”
While Dobrev awaits the start of the rhythmic gymnastics competition on Thursday (she did it all, but always thought the ribbon was the prettiest), we had to ask about her show of flexibility on Conan in May — when she uses Conan O’Brien as a wall for a yoga move. Amazing, she doesn’t have the screengrab pictured here enlarged and framed in her home.
“Now that you mention that, that’s not a bad idea. It was a cool moment for me and a lot of fun. It was a ballsy moment. I can’t believe I did it,” she says, laughing. “If something had gone wrong I would have been incredibly embarrassed and the headlines the next day would have been much different… Oh s—, I just realized what I said. Pun was not intended.” Yes, let’s talk about her foot placement. “I wasn’t actually touching anything, it just looked like that on TV,” she insists. “With the scorpion move, usually it’s a wall, and you actually bend even more and your toes touch your head, but obviously that wouldn’t have been possible.”
